Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop a sound knowledge of the contexts of traditional performance and the canon of contemporary Australian Indigenous works/repertoire.
It requires the ability to develop an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performance works. Researching and presenting historical information whilst connecting and incorporating it into the performance.
The unit applies to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with little or no practical experience in Indigenous Australian theatre research and discusses the context of history and how it influences contemporary Indigenous performance.
The unit applies to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander actors in the performing arts industry.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

- 1.1 Discuss the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works in relation to history
- 1.2 Read a range of different texts by Indigenous writers, from different eras
- 1.3 Access appropriate information about historical context in Australian theatre
- 1.4 Distinguish the major characteristics of Indigenous texts for performance
Make connections between Indigenous text and culture
- 2.1 Discuss cultural issues in performance
- 2.2 Determine style and tone appropriate to the material being produced
- 2.3 Explore and identify the relationship between Indigenous text for theatre, culture and history
Research historical information and link to performance
- 3.1 Identify and explore potential new and alternative information sources to gather historical material
- 3.2 Use formal and informal research techniques to gather stories and accounts of a historical event
- 3.3 Obtain information by observing cultural protocols
- 3.4 Organise and review research materials gathered to determine the link between history and performance
- 3.5 Seek feedback and develop own conclusions on research gathered in consultation with relevant personnel.
Present research and incorporate into own performance
- 4.1 Share research gathered, communicating information effectively to an audience
- 4.2 Evaluate research and presentation processes, assessing own performance and noting areas for future improvement
