Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to perform in Indigenous works by major Indigenous writers.

It requires the ability to prepare, rehearse and perform scenes from Indigenous works, with varying theoretical and practical applications preparing the learner for future contemporary Indigenous performance and audition work.

The candidate is expected to increase expertise and knowledge over time with considerable skills acquired via the practice of technical exercises accompanied with extensive rehearsal time.

The unit applies to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander actors in the performing arts industry.

Elements and Performance Criteria
Scene work and script reading of a significant Indigenous playwright
  • 1.1 Read and understand a script for acting with relation to story structure
  • 1.2 Break down scene into beats where the action of the scene changes
  • 1.3 Identify the historical context in which the script was written
  • 1.4 Discuss and express ideas and concepts about the themes explored in the work
Explore character
  • 2.1 Discuss character in literary texts
  • 2.2 Rehearse and perform short scenes to explore character
  • 2.3 Explore emotional, psychological and physical characterisation from a range of texts
  • 2.4 Imaginatively explore the given circumstances of a character and how this impacts on character choices
Workshop and memorise a short scene
  • 3.1 Select an appropriate scene to workshop under direction
  • 3.2 Discuss and experiment with a range of different memorisation techniques to explore their application to a scene
  • 3.3 Perform scene with attention to character and characterisation
  • 3.4 Use appropriate memorisation techniques to act a short scene
  • 3.5 Rehearse and perform the scene from memory in a group setting
Rehearse Indigenous works for theatre
  • 4.1 Clarify the purpose and parameters of the rehearsal process with relevant personnel
  • 4.2 Rehearse scenes and incorporate feedback under direction
  • 4.3 Respond positively to feedback on own performance and adjust as required
  • 4.4 Contribute to debriefs after rehearsals
Perform Indigenous works for theatre
  • 5.1 Prepare to perform to audiences from memory
  • 5.2 Perform in a style appropriate to the context of the performance and direction
  • 5.3 Maintain concentration and focus throughout performance and respond flexibly to any contingencies as required
  • 5.4 Review performance with other performers and relevant personnel
