Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required for an actor to use basic techniques for script analysis of dramatic text, with application to scenes and characters.
It requires the ability to develop basic textual analysis skills and processes expected of an actor when interpreting texts for character development whilst preparing to perform a role.
Performers such as actors are expected to increase their expertise over time with considerable skills practice of technical exercises accompanied with extensive rehearsal time.
The unit applies to actors in the performing arts industry.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Develop an understanding of script analysis
- 1.1 Actively break down a script into units and beats
- 1.2 Identify psychological actions to the text, applying transitive verbs to identify characters’ actions, objectives and intentions
- 1.3 Clarify and explore specific work processes relevant to script analysis
- 1.4 Apply techniques used to analyse at least two scripts
Interpret texts
- 2.1 Discuss the intention and key aspects of texts
- 2.2 Research and study a variety of contrasting texts for theatre
- 2.3 Integrate and apply interpretation of text by rehearsing and performing scenes from a range of texts
Shape text scenes into a presentation
- 3.1 Read and analyse text within a group context
- 3.2 Rehearse text scenes for performance demonstrating the ability to perform with conviction and expression
- 3.3 Perform text scenes with other actors
- 3.4 Perform stylistic requirements in relation to text and scene presentation requirements
- 3.5 Collaborate with other actors to understand character relationships within the text
- 3.6 Accept direction from relevant personnel, including processing feedback objectively
Develop and perform a fully realized character
- 4.1 Demonstrate comprehension of the four dramatic elements
- 4.2 Explore performance styles for presenting a character from the classical and contemporary canon
- 4.3 Contribute to critical analysis of text interpretation and application to character in a performance setting
- 4.4 Perform a fully realised character in ensemble or individually
