This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a vacuum blood collection system.This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision in a meat processing premises.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety and food safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
- 1.1 Identify work instructions for operating vacuum recovery system
- 1.2 Identify workplace health and safety hazards for operating equipment
- 1.3 Control safety risks by wearing personal protective clothing and using personal protective equipment
- 1.4 Identify hygiene and sanitation requirements for blood collection
- 1.5 Identify potential contamination risks for blood collection
2. Collect blood
- 2.1 Identify and follow start-up procedures for vacuum recovery system
- 2.2 Operate vacuum recovery system and collect blood following work instructions, workplace health and safety requirements and hygiene and sanitation requirements
- 2.3 Monitor blood collection to ensure specifications are met
3. Clean and maintain vacuum blood collection system
- 3.1 Clean equipment following workplace instructions
- 3.2 Undertake routine maintenance of equipment, following workplace requirements
