This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a carton strapping machine.This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision in a workplace where meat products or pet meat products are packed in cartons, and the cartons are strapped either manually or automatically.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety and food safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for work

1.1 Identify work instruction for strapping cartons
1.2 Identify workplace health and safety requirements for task, including personal protective equipment
1.3 Prepare equipment and consumables for strapping cartons

2. Strap cartons

2.1 Perform start-up checks of equipment to ensure it is in working order
2.2 Move cartons to strapper following workplace health and safety and food safety requirements
2.3 Operate carton strapping machine following workplace health and safety, food safety and workplace requirements
2.4 Monitor consumables and refill as required
2.5 Monitor strapping process for faults with process or equipment and report promptly following workplace requirements
2.6 Maintain strapping machine following workplace requirements
