Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to select and use hand and power tools to manufacture and/or install shading and security screens, which may include curtains, blinds, awnings, shade sails, louvre shutters, roller shutters and security and non-security screens.The unit applies to individuals who use tools to complete routine tasks under limited supervision.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for tool use
- 1.1 Identify task requirement from work instructions
- 1.2 Select the appropriate tool based on task requirements, and identify work health and safety requirements for its use
- 1.3 Confirm serviceability and safety of tool, and report any faults to supervisor
- 1.4 Select equipment to hold or support material based on the tool selected and the nature of the task
- 1.5 Prepare material and secure in position to ensure safe operation
2. Use tools
- 2.1 Use tools and required power supply safely and in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications
- 2.2 Use techniques that optimise the effective use of the tool for the nominated task
- 2.3 Ensure safe state, position and location of tools in the work area when not in immediate use
3. Clean up work area and tools
- 3.1 Clean tools and equipment following manufacturer guidelines
- 3.2 Complete routine operator maintenance on tools in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer instructions
- 3.3 Store tools and equipment based on specific storage needs and workplace requirements
