Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to restrain animals prior to stunning.This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision in a meat processing premises, to operate restrainers such as knocking boxes and V-belt restrainers.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to restrain animals
- 1.1 Identify workplace health and safety requirements for task, including personal protective equipment
- 1.2 Identify animal welfare requirements for restraining animals to minimise stress and for minimum time
- 1.3 Identify requirements for using mechanical restraints
- 1.4 Check that the restrainer is set for the size of animals, where used
2. Confine animal
- 2.1 Comply with all workplace requirements and with animal welfare requirements
- 2.2 Monitor operation and report incidents
- 2.3 Monitor welfare of animal and report incidents
- 2.4 Release restrained animal
- 2.5 Ensure animal is never left in a restraint during a break or breakdown
