Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conclude and report the outcomes of search and rescue (SAR) operations, including reviewing activities and communicating with stakeholders.This unit applies to police staff undertaking police SAR coordination duties.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to resource procurement, stakeholder and family liaison and work health and safety (WHS).Those undertaking this unit would work within multi-agency teams and often liaise with stakeholders. They would make decisions independently while giving consideration to financial and human resource management requirements. They would perform a range of complex tasks and demonstrate adaptability across a broad range of contexts,  either in the field or within police station/office environments. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Conclude SAR operation.
  • 1.1 Review SAR activities in accordance with legislative and investigative requirements.
  • 1.2 Determine when to conclude SAR operation with the assistance of medical advice, expiry timeframe of survival, no likelihood of locating subject(s), or a successful rescue.
  • 1.3 Liaise with family prior to concluding SAR operation to maintain transparency.
  • 1.4 Consult stakeholders before finalising the SAR operation and advise them of the decision to conclude.
  • 1.5 Coordinate recall/stand down of assets in accordance with resource requirements.
  • 1.6 Ensure all assets are accounted for and prepared for redeployment.
  • 1.7 Review outcomes of operation through debrief of SAR members and stakeholders.
2. Report outcomes of SAR operation.
  • 2.1 Collate information/log for SAR records.
  • 2.2 Record critical decisions for accountability and transparency purposes.
  • 2.3 Complete national and/or jurisdictional reports for dissemination in accordance with reporting requirements.
  • 2.4 Assist with any judicial and/or internal and external review requirements.
