Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to unload animals from transport. It requires a working knowledge of animal handling techniques and associated facilities and equipment.This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision to unload animals from transport at a meat processing or animal handling facility.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to unload animals
- 1.1 Identify work instructions, animal welfare requirements and work health and safety requirements
- 1.2 Identify facilities and equipment required for task, and confirm with supervisor
- 1.3 Check the work site, facilities and equipment for hazards
- 1.4 Carry out or report repairs and maintenance of facilities and equipment required for the unloading of animals
- 1.5 Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
2. Unload animals
- 2.1 Unload animals in a safe manner to minimise stress and ensure no injury to other workers or animals
- 2.2 Identify, count and record animals following workplace guidelines
- 2.3 Ensure documentation is passed on to supervisor according to workplace and transporter requirements
3. Perform appropriate animal health procedures
- 3.1 Sort animals according to workplace and regulatory requirements
- 3.2 Identify and separate sick or injured animals
- 3.3 Perform animal health treatments as instructed and where required
- 3.4 Feed and water animals following workplace requirements
