Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to pack and label meat products, using automatic packaging and labelling equipment.This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision in meat processing premises.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety and food safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
- 1.1 Identify work instruction for operating automatic packaging and labelling
- 1.2 Identify workplace health and safety requirements for task, including personal protective equipment
- 1.3 Identify hygiene and sanitation requirements for task
- 1.4 Prepare consumables for task
2. Set up packaging unit
- 2.1 Implement workplace start-up procedures following workplace requirements
- 2.2 Load consumables to specifications
- 2.3 Select equipment settings following packaging instructions
- 2.4 Carry out pre-operational checks
- 2.5 Identify and report faults in equipment to supervisor
3. Set weight controls
- 3.1 Set weight controls to production requirements, ensuring bagged product is check-weighed to verify machine set-up
- 3.2 Adjust controls to achieve production specifications
4. Operate packaging process
- 4.1 Package product to workplace requirements, ensuring process follows workplace health and safety, workplace and hygiene requirements
- 4.2 Check packs for damage or defects and take appropriate corrective action
- 4.3 Seal and code to packing requirements
5. Describe packaged product
- 5.1 Measure packaged product following workplace requirements
- 5.2 Label packaged product following workplace requirements
- 5.3 Check quality of packaged and labelled product meets specifications
- 5.4 Report damaged cartons following workplace requirements
