This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a wool dryer and wool press.This unit applies to individuals who work under general supervision to operate wool dryers and presses in a fellmongering premises.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.Mandatory workplace requirements apply to the assessment of this unit.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
  • 1.1 Identify work instructions for operating wool dryer and press
  • 1.2 Identify workplace health and safety hazards for operating dryer and press
  • 1.3 Control safety risks by using personal protective equipment
  • 1.4 Prepare equipment and consumables for wool bales
2. Dry wool
  • 2.1 Follow start-up routine for wool dryer following workplace requirements and manufacturer's specifications
  • 2.2 Operate wool dryer to workplace and health and safety requirements and manufacturer's specifications
  • 2.3 Monitor wool for correct drying and flow through dryer
  • 2.4 Perform routine maintenance and cleaning following workplace requirements
3. Operate wool press to bale wool
  • 3.1 Follow start-up procedures for wool press following workplace requirements and manufacturer's specifications
  • 3.2 Feed wool into wool press following work instructions
  • 3.3 Bale wool following workplace requirements and customer specifications
  • 3.4 Monitor dryness of wool as it is baled
  • 3.5 Observe fleece type and class separations following workplace requirements
  • 3.6 Fasten bale closed
  • 3.7 Brand, weigh and record bales following workplace requirements
  • 3.8 Move bale using safe manual handling techniques
