Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to plan, design, implement, and evaluate a complex engineering project. It describes the vocational function of integrating advanced engineering principles, project management practices, research approaches, and professional standards to deliver innovative and industry-relevant engineering solutions.
This unit applies to engineering professionals or technical employees undertaking projects that require independent problem-solving, design development, and project management in a range of engineering contexts. Graduates undertaking work aligned with this unit integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application to produce fully justified engineering solutions.
This unit is broad-based and may be applied across diverse engineering disciplines and industry environments, including manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, and systems engineering projects.
Work is typically carried out independently, under professional standards, with guidance from industry mentors or supervisors as required.
No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
Define and plan an engineering project.
- 1.1 Identify and justify an engineering problem or opportunity aligned with professional practice.
- 1.2 Formulate project objectives, scope, constraints, and success criteria.
- 1.3 Conduct a comprehensive literature, standards, and regulatory review to establish the technical foundation for the project.
- 1.4 Develop a detailed project plan including milestones, resources, risk management, sustainability and ethical considerations.
- 1.5 Interpret and apply project governance, stakeholder engagement, and reporting requirements in the project plan, with evidence of correct application of organisational and regulatory frameworks.
Design and implement an engineering solution
- 2.1 Apply advanced engineering principles to develop a feasible and innovative design or system.
- 2.2 Select and use analytical, computational, and modelling tools to validate design decisions.
- 2.3 Manage project tasks and resources to achieve technical objectives safely and efficiently.
- 2.4 Document design iterations and justify decisions using engineering standards and evidence-based reasoning.
- 2.5 Integrate sustainability, cost-effectiveness, risk and compliance requirements into the design and implementation process.
Test, evaluate, and communicate project outcomes.
- 3.1 Conduct verification and validation against defined specifications and project requirements.
- 3.2 Critically evaluate project outcomes, identifying limitations, risks and opportunities for future improvement or development.
- 3.3 Prepare a professional engineering report that communicates methodology, findings, design rationale, and project outcomes.
- 3.4 Deliver a technical presentation to a professional audience, demonstrating clarity, and critical reflection.
- 3.5 Reflect on personal and team performance, identifying lessons learned and areas for ongoing professional development.
